Global industry map

A view of where charging products and their components are designed, made and tested — organised by capability rather than by company size.

What this map is for

Most sourcing problems start with not knowing which part of the chain a capability sits in. A power bank is not made by one industry: it is a cell, a protection board, a controller, a coil assembly, a housing and a compliance file, and those come from different places.

The map groups the chain by capability so that a buyer or an engineer can see where each part of a product comes from, and which questions belong to which supplier.

Capability layers

Layer What it determines Typical supplier type
Cells and chemistry Capacity, cycle life, thermal behaviour, transport classification Cell manufacturers, cell distributors
Protection and power management Safety cut-offs, charging profile, efficiency IC vendors, board houses
Wireless power Coil geometry, coupling, foreign object detection, thermal derating Coil and module suppliers
Power conversion Efficiency, thermal density, size, hold-up behaviour Controller and magnetics suppliers
Mechanical and thermal Drop performance, grip, heat spreading, ingress protection Tooling and enclosure suppliers
Assembly and test Consistency, yield, traceability, ageing results Contract manufacturers, own factories
Compliance and documentation Market access, transport paperwork, test evidence Accredited laboratories, consultancies

Where capability concentrates

Production and design capability for charging products is not evenly distributed. The table below records where each layer is concentrated today. It describes capability, not quality: a region's presence in a row says nothing about the standard of work done there.

Layer Principal concentrations
Cells and chemistry Chinese mainland, South Korea, Japan
Power management ICs Chinese mainland, Taiwan, China, United States, Europe
Wireless power coils and modules Chinese mainland, Taiwan, China, South Korea
Power conversion and GaN Chinese mainland, Taiwan, China, United States, Europe
Tooling and enclosure Chinese mainland, Vietnam, India
Assembly Chinese mainland, Vietnam, India, Mexico, Eastern Europe
Compliance testing Europe, United States, Chinese mainland, Taiwan, China, South Korea

Directory entries by layer

Every company entry in the directory records the layer it sits in, so the two pages can be read against each other rather than in isolation. Entries within a layer are ordered alphabetically by legal name, and the order carries no meaning.

Layer Directory entries
Cells and chemistry EVE Energy
Protection and power management Richtek Technology
Wireless power Vishay Intertechnology, Würth Elektronik
Power conversion Navitas Semiconductor, Sunlord Electronics
Mechanical and thermal Ju Teng International, Tongda Group
Assembly and test WOWOHCOOL
Compliance and documentation TÜV Rheinland

How to use it

If you are sourcing, start with the layer that constrains your product. A power bank that runs hot is a cell and thermal problem before it is an assembly problem. A charger that will not hold a negotiation is a controller and firmware problem.

If you are selling components, the map shows which layer you sit in and which layer your customer's problem actually belongs to. Most technical disputes in this sector are between two layers that each think the other one owns the issue.

If you are testing or certifying, the map shows where the design decisions that determine your test outcome are made, which is usually upstream of the company that commissioned the test.

Status

The map describes capability layers and their principal concentrations. Company-level entries are published in the member directory, and every entry records the layer it sits in, so the two pages can be read against each other rather than in isolation.

All seven layers now carry at least one entry. Coverage within a layer is still thin: one or two entries is not a picture of a layer, and the presence of an entry says nothing about the companies that are absent. Entries are added in batches, each checked against a public source before publication, and an empty row is a gap in the alliance's work rather than a statement about the industry.

Correction

Regional capability descriptions age quickly and are easy to get wrong. If a row here misrepresents where a capability sits, report it through the contact page. Corrections are recorded on this page.
