What the company does

Tongda Group Holdings is a manufacturer of precision structural parts. The company states that it was founded in 1978, it is headquartered in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, China, and it has been listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2000 under stock code 698.

Its business covers casings and precision components for mobile devices, casings for smart appliances, and parts for network equipment, along with the tooling and injection moulding that produce them. Manufacturing is concentrated in Fujian and Guangdong.

Where it sits in the chain

Mechanical and thermal is the fifth layer of the industry map. It determines drop performance, grip, heat spreading and ingress protection — the properties a user notices first and a specification sheet usually states last.

It is fair to ask why a directory for charging products lists a supplier whose published customers are phone and appliance makers. The answer is that a charger and a power bank are moulded plastic enclosures around a hot component, and they are produced by the same tooling shops, on the same machines, from the same engineering plastics, as the devices they charge. The supplier base is shared, and a buyer sourcing an enclosure is choosing from it whether or not the supplier's own marketing mentions chargers.

What to check when sourcing at this layer

Tooling cost is front-loaded and amortised over volume. A mould is a large one-off cost that is recovered across the production run. This is the single biggest difference between the mechanical layer and the electronic ones: at low volumes the tooling dominates the unit price, and at high volumes it disappears. It also means switching supplier mid-programme is expensive in a way that switching a coil supplier is not.

Thermal design is decided here, not in the electronics. In a sealed enclosure with no fan, heat leaves through the plastic and the air gap. Wall thickness, internal air volume, vent geometry and the choice of plastic all set the ceiling on how much power the product can dissipate continuously. A charger that throttles is often described as an electronics problem when the enclosure is what fixed the limit.

Drop and ingress claims need a test method. Impact and water-resistance ratings mean nothing without the standard and the test conditions behind them. Ask which standard, at which drop height or immersion depth, on how many samples.

Engineering plastics are not interchangeable. Flame retardancy, thermal conductivity and impact behaviour vary widely between grades that all look the same on a finished part.
